Student Handbook: Attendance

Attendance
The Enumclaw Middle School staff, administration, and community believe that regular and punctual attendance at school is vitally important for students to achieve maximum benefit from the school program. Such consistent, regular attendance has a positive effect on the school learning environment and will help all students fully realize their academic potential.
Student mastery of course content and achievement of academic objectives through participation in class activities and student/teacher interaction are of extreme importance. Teachers shall communicate to students the extent to which absences or lack of class participation may be reflected in course grades or credit. (WAC 184.235)
In recognition of the responsibility of parents/guardians and the legal obligation established by the Compulsory School Attendance Law, RCW 28A.225, for ensuring the school attendance of children under their care, Enumclaw Middle School has established regulations and procedures for controlling absenteeism, truancy, and tardiness of students. These procedures include informing and involving parents in the resolution of such problems.
After 1 unexcused absence: Inform the student’s parent/guardian by a notice in writing or by telephone, in a language the parent is fluent, whenever the student has failed to attend school after one unexcused absence. RCW 28A.225.020
After 3 unexcused absences within any month: Schedule a conference with parent/guardian and student for the purpose of identifying barriers to the student’s regular attendance and the supports and resources that may be made available to the family and the steps to be taken to support the student to attend. RCW 28A.225.020
After 7 unexcused absences in a month and not later than 15 cumulative unexcused absences in a school year: Refer the parent and child to a community engagement board (CEB) or other coordinated means of intervention. The CEB meeting must take place within twenty days of the referral. The community engagement board must meet with the child, a parent, and a school district representative and enter into an agreement. RCW 28A.225.035
